| Chris Monteith, a native of Bryson City, NC, started King Karaoke when he was 18 years
old. For the last 6 years, Monteith has taken his act as an Elvis Impersonator, Karaoke
expert, and disc jockey on the road. "I Never thought It would get his big, It
started out as a joke." Monteith says.
While visiting a karaoke bar in Sylva, NC, a college town near Western Carolina
University, Monteith went to the roots of rock and roll and chose an Elvis Presley
recording, Suspicious Minds, while his friends chose the latest hits.
"I got up and put the moves with the song. I did the leg shakin' thing"
Monteith says with an Elvis-like, boyish grin. "The college kids loved it, and I felt
dynamite!"
Rumors of his talents soon had him traveling throughout the southeast on a regular
basis.
Although Monteith bears an uncanny resemblance to the young Elvis, he goes for the
King's fashion flair of the 1970's and keeps an ample supply of scarves for tossing into
the audience or wrapping around the napes of fans seeking a souvenir.
Monteith is uncertain as to the source of his fascination with Elvis and his music.
"My parents aren't big Elvis fans. Nobody influenced me; it was just the VOICE." |
